The Basics: Edibles 101

Let’s say you’re about to place your weekly THC delivery but you’re looking to try something outside of your usual smoking comfort zone. What about edibles? They sound like fun and they look delicious, but where to start? It’s not at all different from buying weed online – think of it like cheap canna, you just need to consider elements like the type of edible you want to consume and dosage. If you’re new to edibles or cannabis culture in general, keep reading for an introduction to the edibles experience. Available at cannabis stores and online dispensaries in Canada.

What exactly is an edible?

Let’s start with the basic definition of edibles, shall we? Edibles are an ingestible form of cannabis that doesn’t require a heat source to activate the plants chemical compounds.

Edibles vs. flower, what’s the difference?

When you inhale cannabis, the cannabinoids (i.e., THC) enter the bloodstream directly through the lungs. The THC goes through a different metabolic process which instead of passing through the stomach and then liver, goes straight to the brain.

When you consume cannabis orally, the THC is processed in the gastrointestinal system and then metabolized by the liver. There, the THC is converted to a 11-hydroxy-THC metabolite (small molecule) which crosses the blood-brain barrier giving you a more intense high.

Types of edibles

The types of edibles available in the market run the gamut from chocolates, jellies, baked goods to condiments (cannabis chutney anyone?), to drinks, oils and tinctures – a dropper applied under the tongue. FYI the area under the tongue is a prime area for quick absorption of substances into the blood stream so if you don’t want to wait around for your cookie to kick-in, tinctures are great as a less intense, quick acting alternative.

When it comes to edibles, figuring out the type of experience you want is important. If you’re looking for more of that traditional high, go with a THC edible for the psychoactive feeling of euphoria, relaxation or maybe even creativity. Want something a little more low key? The CBD edible route will be less intense since it’s non-intoxicating. It’s important to note here that CBD still has psychoactive effects, just not in the same way as THC. If you want a balanced high, there are edibles which contain equal or near equal amounts of THC and CBD. The presence of THC will mean you’ll get a bit of the traditional high that comes with it, but the effects of the CBD will make the high more nuanced, causing a more soothing, and mellow high.

There’s a saying when it comes to weed edibles – start low and go slow. If you’re new to edibles, there’s often a tendency to overconsume. Edibles take longer to take into effect so it’s not unlikely (especially if you’ve just had a big meal) that the edible you just nibbled on could take up to 90 minutes before it starts to kick-in, could be even longer before it reaches its peak.

Taking the right approach to dosing is critical to a pleasant daily marijuana edibles Canada experience. The right dose will vary between individuals – like with any medication. Other variables like previous cannabis use, tolerance and metabolism will also have an impact on the ideal dose.

THC edible cheat sheet

A dosage between 1-2.5mg will have effects that include mild relief from pain, stress, anxiety and will give you that extra boost of creativity and focus – a great place to start if you’re new to edibles or you like to micro dose.

A dosage range between 2.5-15mg is good for stronger pain relief, feelings of euphoria and can help with sleep – this is the range where coordination and perception start to become impaired. In this range, we like the Mota Sour Squares at 10mg per piece!

THC edibles with a dosage range between 30-50mg will have strong euphoric effects and will deeply impact coordination and perception. Some Black Rabbit favourites in this range include the Faded Edibles Fruit Pack Gummy (30mg per piece) and the Euphoria Extractions Shatter Bars (50mg per piece).

A dosage between 50-100mg will significantly impair coordination and perception and could introduce the infamous negative symptoms usually tied with overconsumption i.e., nausea, paranoia, increased heart rate. Anything above 100mg is considered an extremely high dose and the negative symptoms will increase as your dosage increases. For a (responsible) good time, we like the Euphoria Extractions Shatter Cookies at 100mg for the whole cookie.

A few things to keep in mind

Start low and go slow. Did we say that already? We did, but it’s worth repeating because overconsumption is easy, and we want you to have a pleasant edible experience. If it’s your first time, Health Canada recommends starting with products that contain 2.5mg of THC of less – with an equal or higher amount of CBD.

Let’s say you’re about an hour into your edible journey and you’re not feeling any effects just yet. Try eating a small snack to initiate the digestion and absorption in your gut.
