We throw around the term “wake and bake” around here often but ever wonder how cannabis and coffee actually interact with one another? Read on for what you need to know about pairing coffee and cannabis and if you need supplies for said wake and bake, remember that Black Rabbit’s online dispensary does same day weed delivery and weed delivery Canada wide.
Caffeine, Cannabis and the Endocannabinoid System
While research on the interaction between marijuana and caffeine is still in the early stages, there’s one thing we know for sure, both have impacts on the endocannabinoid system (ECS). We know that the ECS is a complex communications system found in the brain and body that is capable of interacting with the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. We also know that the ECS is comprised of three main components: endocannabinoids – small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors, receptors – found throughout the body and functionally bind to endocannabinoids signalling to the ECS that an action needs to take place i.e. relieve pain and enzymes – responsible for breaking down the endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function. When interacting with cannabinoids, all three components of the ECS work together, ultimately helping to regulate and bring balance to human functions such as sleep, appetite and pain sensation.
A 2018 study in the Journal of Internal Medicine found that there was a reduction in metabolites of the ECS with increased coffee intake which essentially means that the ECS metabolized less and less as those participating in the study increased their coffee consumption. According to naturopathic doctor and cannabis specialist Dr. Shawn Meirovici this means that caffeine in general can slow down the endocannabinoid system. To break it down even further, Dr. Meirovici explains, “caffeine is a stimulator of nerve activity…and endocannabinoids are inhibitors of nerve activity. It would seem that coffee/caffeine may decrease this inhibitory activity and therefore may alter the calming effect of our endocannabinoid system, making it harder for the body to chill out.” So although the concept of a wake and bake may sound relaxing, it might very well be the opposite – but it all depends on dosage.
A 2014 study on squirrel monkeys examined the cannabinoid THC and MSX-3 (a caffeine like compound). The study found that when the squirrel monkeys consumed low doses of MSX-3, they wanted less THC but when they consumed larger doses of MSX-3, they wanted more THC. Essentially this means that low doses of caffeine for the monkeys may not have impacted the ECS that much and therefore didn’t impact their high but more caffeine slowed the ECS requiring more THC to feel a high. So maybe skip the cup of joe if you’re looking to have a marathon session of smoking or if coffee is a must, just start low and go slow with the amount of cannabis you’re actually consuming.
Pairing Coffee and Cannabis
If you’re looking for specific strains to compliment your morning roast, taking a peek at your bud’s tasting notes and terpene profiles are a good place to start. Terpenes are aromatic oils that colour cannabis with a distinctive flavour like citrus, berry, mint and pine. While some terpenes may complement the high, terpenes themselves are non-intoxicating. Various terpenes can promote a feeling of energy, relaxation, and happiness so if you really want to tailor your wake and bake experience, consider a strain with terpenes that energize such as Mac Stomper LSO.
If a joint and java isn’t your preferred method for waking and baking, a couple drops of a tincture like MOTA CBD Tincture will be just as effective. Or why not make your coffee a bulletproof coffee with a tiny bit of cannabutter – remember a little goes a long way so maybe start with 1.5 tbs of real butter and .5 tbs (or less) of cannabutter.
