How weed helps with pain relief

The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as: “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage.” Often on this site we indicate which strains are good pain remedies however it isn’t necessarily the case that the pain and discomfort associated with cold and flus can be offset with a few puffs of your favourite bud.

We know that all humans have a cell-signaling system known as the endocannabinoid system and we break down that system down further here but as a refresher “the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex, cell-signaling system identified in the early 1990s by researchers exploring THC.” The ECS is a complex communications system found in the brain and body that is capable of interacting with the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

The ECS is comprised of three main components: endocannabinoids – small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors, receptors – found throughout the body and functionally bind to endocannabinoids signalling to the ECS that an action needs to take place i.e. relieve pain and enzymes – responsible for breaking down the endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function. When interacting with cannabinoids, all three components of the ECS work together, ultimately helping to regulate and bring balance to human functions such as pain sensation and discomfort.

THC has analgesic effects which means it ultimately relieves pain by blocking pain signals in our nervous system by binding to the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system and therefore setting off a sequence of events that result in no pain signal release.

Is smoking weed helpful when you have a cold or flu?

From a naturopathic perspective and according to Toronto based ND, Dr. Shawn Meirovici who specializes in pain management, there is no direct link between cannabis use for treating colds and the flu. With that and based on how our bodies and the ECS interact with marijuana, it can be said that cannabis is really better suited to help with those aches and pains that come with a cold and flu. You’re also probably better off using a topical like the MOTA Green Balm or consuming an edible form of marijuana instead of straight up smoking it. There isn’t any evidence that says smoking weed while you have a cough or a cold/flu is unsafe but does it help? During this time, the throat and lungs are already sensitive and irritated and the physical act of smoking may only agitate them further, prolonging discomfort.

Well what about sleep? Often times, the discomfort experienced with cold and flu symptoms will keep you up at night and we know that THC has sedating effects and that strains with high levels of THC can reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. It’s important to note that THC doesn’t actually put you to sleep, rather it’s a sedative and has properties that encourage sleep. Again, staying away from harsh smoke is your best bet here and a gentle, flavourless tincture like the MOTA THC Sleep Tincture in your cup of tea before bed time can really help.
